What is University Model School?
A University Model School (UMS) is a relatively new and viable alternative in education. The model was pioneered by Grace Preparatory Academy in Arlington, Texas. This highly successful model combines into a single program two proven elements – The professional instruction of a classroom teacher and the one-on-one instruction and guidance of the parents. University Model Schools integrate the strengths of traditional schooling with the strong moral values of home education.
Heritage Academy is a nondenominational, Christian, private school. Heritage is a UMS school and is an active member of the National Association of University Schools (NAUMS). We have a university-style format, with classes held on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Tuesdays and Thursdays are spent under the supervision of parents whose responsibility it is to guide their student to completion of the assigned work until such time that the student becomes self-motivated and mature in their responsibilities as students. Other proven elements include low student/teacher ratios, hands-on learning, a strong work ethic for students, effective curriculum, and local school operation and management. Consequently fewer classroom hours result in lower overall costs to the family.
The “University” look shows up in several ways. First, being on campus Monday, Wednesday and Friday as mentioned above. Second, students can be enrolled in one class or for all six periods. Although the majority of our students are on campus all day, we do have students coming and going all day similar to a college campus. Third, some students, with qualifying scores may move up or down according to their academic needs. Another similarity is the pace of the classroom necessitating students learning efficient note taking and management of assignments between classes like a college student.
The University Model uniquely prepares students for college since they are used to a college-like setting, pace and academic demands. At the same time, parents enjoy the benefit of the UMS schedule and having more time with their children.
