Heritage Academy Admission Process
Heritage Academy’s admissions process begins when parents visit our website, involves two meetings required for parents, and includes a written application, references, school records, testing and an interview. First, parents attend an “information” meeting to learn about University Model Schooling (UMS), and then attend the “admissions” meeting to gain more specific information about Heritage and receive an application. Applications are returned and testing is administered to each student for the purpose of admissions and placement.
Heritage utilizes the ninth edition of the Harcourt Brace Stanford Achievement Test which evaluates reading and math skills. Specifically, the Stanford test evaluates vocabulary, reading comprehension, mathematical problem solving, and mathematical procedures. It also provides an overall reading score and an overall math score. We require those overall stanine scores to be “6” for admission to the school. In addition, during testing we require a writing sample from all students and a multiplication and division worksheet for middle school applicants. High school applicants are given math entrance exams. These additional evaluation tools are used in combination with the Stanford scores for placement of students into particular classes. These evaluations provide us the student’s performance level and allow us to begin identification and discussion of academic, character and developmental goals in the interview. Further discussion of the goals will take place after enrollment with the Director of Student Affairs.
Once the applicant’s scores are found acceptable, the application has been reviewed, school records received and references are suitable, an interview is scheduled. Interviews are conducted by a team of two representatives of Heritage and questions used are similar to those on the application in order to establish consistency and integrity. The interview attempts to observe the spiritual and emotional maturity and cohesiveness of each family; their understanding of the UMS; and determines if appropriate supervision will be provided on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s at home.
Finally, all of these factors; starting with observations and information gained in both meetings, from testing, review of records and the application, from references, and the interview are taken into account in making the admissions decision. Prayer and discernment are encouraged, first of the parents at the initial meetings and then utilized by the Admissions Director and agents of Heritage throughout the entire admissions process. The Admissions Director may consult with the interviewers and/or the other administrators in making the final decision. Once the decision is made, it is the responsibility of the Admissions Director to inform the applicant’s parents.
The admissions process is reviewed annually by the Admissions Director to make improvements. The meetings are evaluated for the effectiveness in dissemination of information. The admission application and reference forms are scrutinized to improve the necessity and gathering of information. Exit counseling is conducted with parents when a student is expelled, asked to withdraw, or not permitted to re-enroll.
Heritage Academy admits students of any race, color, and national or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs and activities generally accorded or made available to its students. Heritage does not discriminate on the basis of race in administration of its educational policies, admission policies, athletic programs, or any other school administered policies.
